Catch Raikou, Entei & Suicune in Gold, Silver & Crystal
Where Raikou and Entei roam in Gold, Silver and Crystal, how to stop them fleeing, and how to reach Suicune: roaming in Gold/Silver, Tin Tower in Crystal.
Published
Raikou and Entei roam Johto’s grass routes at level 40 in all three games, from the moment they flee the Burned Tower basement in Ecruteak City. Suicune roams with them in Gold Silver, but in Crystal it waits for one level 40 battle on the first floor of the Tin Tower.
| Pokémon | Games | Where | Starts on |
|---|---|---|---|

| Suicune | Gold Silver | Roams 16 Johto routes | Route 38 |
| Crystal | Tin Tower 1F (one battle) |
What starts it: the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City
Beat your rival on the ground floor of the Burned Tower, drop through the floor into the basement and walk up to the three beasts. They wake and bolt one after another, and the game starts Raikou and Entei roaming — and Suicune too in Gold and Silver. In Crystal, Morty’s Gym turns you away until you have seen this scene.

How the roaming beasts move in Gold, Silver and Crystal
Each beast sits on one of 16 Johto routes (29–39 and 42–46, never a town, cave or the sea routes 40 and 41). It moves every time you cross a route or town border and every time you go through a door — a gatehouse, a house or a Pokémon Center: usually to a route next to its own, now and then to a random one. Flying scatters them to random routes, and after a battle with anything else there is a 1 in 16 chance they move as well.
A beast only appears in tall grass, never while you Surf. When one is on your route, about one wild grass encounter in ten is that beast. After you have met it once, its Pokédex entry’s Area map shows the route it is on right now.

How to catch Raikou and Entei when they keep running away
A roaming beast runs on every turn it gets. Four things stop it: sleep, freeze, a trapping move you used (Mean Look or Spider Web) and a binding move holding it (Wrap, Bind, Fire Spin, Clamp or Whirlpool). Throwing a ball comes first, so you always get one throw before it runs; a move only lands first if your Pokémon is faster. Lost HP stays when it escapes, but sleep and other status do not.
Warning — Knock it out and it is gone for good: Unlike HeartGold and SoulSilver, Gold, Silver and Crystal never bring a fainted beast back — not even after the Hall of Fame. Save before every encounter and use weak moves once its HP is low.
- Find its route in the Pokédex Area map Open its Pokédex entry and choose Area. If it is far away, Fly near it — that scatters the beasts anyway.
- Hop a border until it lands on your route Walk back and forth across a border between two roaming routes, for example Route 36 and Route 37, and check the Area map after each crossing.
- Use a Repel with a lead at level 40 or lower A Repel only blocks a beast if your lead Pokémon is above level 40. With a lead at level 40 or lower it keeps the weak wild Pokémon away and still lets the beast through.
- Put it to sleep, then throw balls Lead with a Pokémon that is faster than the beast and knows a sleep move or Mean Look. Asleep it cannot run, and sleep is worth more than any ball: at 1 HP an Ultra Ball catches about 1 in 16 while it sleeps, about 1 in 43 while it is awake.
Which ball: all three beasts have the lowest catch rate (3), so a Master Ball on the first turn is the only sure thing. Otherwise use Ultra Balls. Kurt’s Fast Ball does not help here: a bug makes it work on only three Pokémon — Magnemite, Grimer and Tangela — none of them a beast.
Suicune in Crystal: Clear Bell, Wise Trio and the Tin Tower
In Crystal, Suicune shows up in Cianwood City (where Eusine battles you), then on Route 42 and on Route 36, and keeps cycling through them until you battle it. These sightings are optional: the Tin Tower only checks the three steps below.
Get the Clear Bell in Crystal’s Radio Tower
Free the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City from Team Rocket. Once you beat the Executive on the fifth floor, the Director thanks you with the Clear Bell.

Show the Clear Bell to the sages, then beat the Wise Trio
In Ecruteak City, enter the Tin Tower’s entrance house and talk to the sages blocking the way: they hear the Clear Bell and step aside. Go through the back into the Wise Trio’s Room and beat the three sages, Gaku, Masa and Koji. Koji then lets you out to the Tin Tower.

Warning — Save before you enter the Tin Tower: Suicune battles you the moment you step onto the first floor. You cannot run, and once the battle ends — caught, fainted or not — it is gone for good.
Battle Suicune on Tin Tower 1F (level 40)
Walk into Tin Tower 1F. Raikou and Entei appear first and run off — unless you already caught them — then Suicune steps forward for a level 40 battle. It does not flee, so sleep and Ultra Balls are all you need.
