Abandoned Ship Guide: Scanner, Storage Key & All Rooms

Abandoned Ship Guide: Scanner, Storage Key & All Rooms — Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald guide card

How to clear the Route 108 wreck: the Storage Key and TM13, the four cabin keys, the hidden Scanner, and Stern's DeepSeaTooth or DeepSeaScale choice.

Published · Updated

The Abandoned Ship is the wreck of the S.S. Cactus on Route 108. A Surf-only visit yields TM13 Ice Beam; returning with Dive opens a hidden floor of keys, cabins and the Scanner that Captain Stern exchanges for one of Clamperl’s evolution items.

First visit: Surf and the Storage Key

Board the wreck from Route 108. Follow the 1F cabins and deck to the stairs down to B1F. Search the open cabins for Harbor Mail, Escape Rope, Revive and a Dive Ball.

Collect the Storage Key in the captain’s office

Take the deck stairs to the captain’s office. Collect the Storage Key from the item ball in the southwestern corner, west of Stern’s aide. It is a visible pickup, not a hidden floor item.

Unlock the B1F storage room for Ice Beam

Return to the B1F corridor and use the Storage Key on the northeastern locked cabin. Collect TM13 Ice Beam inside. This room is available before Dive.

The hidden floor: every room key and the Scanner location

Return once you can use Dive. The submerged passage reaches six numbered cabins. Search rooms 3 and 5 first, then follow the two key branches below. Each key is consumed when it opens its door.

The live ship map has 1F, B1F, the hidden cabins, the underwater passage and the captain’s office. The cabin layout below shows all six rooms together, which cannot fit in one game screen. Rooms 4, 5 and 6 are across the top; rooms 1, 2 and 3 are across the bottom.

Tip — Fastest route to the Scanner: Search room 5 for the Rm. 2 Key, then open room 2. The longer room 3 → 1 → 4 → 6 branch holds TM18, a Water Stone and a Luxury Ball.

Search room 5 for the Rm. 2 Key

Room 5 is the upper middle cabin. Search the floor one tile north of the position shown below for the Rm. 2 Key. The key is hidden; room-entry sparkles briefly mark search spots, including decoys.

Open room 2 and collect the Scanner

Use that key on the lower middle door in the hidden corridor. Inside room 2, collect the Scanner from the item ball on the left side of the cabin.

Trade the Scanner to Stern: DeepSeaTooth or DeepSeaScale

Take the Scanner to Captain Stern at the harbor in northeast Slateport City. He offers either a DeepSeaTooth or a DeepSeaScale for Clamperl.

Warning — One Scanner, one reward: A save file contains one Scanner. Choose one item from Stern; obtaining both evolutions requires trading for the other held item.

Surfing mostly finds Tentacool with rare Tentacruel. Fishing adds Magikarp, but the wreck’s real rewards are its keys, TMs and Scanner.
