Hoenn has 75 Secret Base spots, and the game distinguishes exactly seven entrance tiles: the left and right halves of a Secret Power tree, a shrub, and four rock walls. Only five of those seven look any different on screen — three of the four rock-wall tiles draw the identical indent — so the route, not the colour, is what identifies a spot. You hold one base at a time, and furnish it from the 120 decorations the games ship.

How to make a Secret Base in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald

Secret Power is a normal attacking move that does something extra out of battle: used in front of a marked tree, shrub or rock wall, it hollows out a room behind it. The room is yours immediately, and the entrance stays open on the overworld from then on. Talk to the PC inside to move your base to a different spot, or to abandon it — you hold one base at a time and moving it leaves the old spot empty again.

Secret Power itself is TM43, handed over free by a woman in a house in Mauville City once you have talked to her about Secret Bases. Every spot in this guide accepts it; there is no second requirement, no badge gate and no story flag.

Secret Base entrance types: every form in Hoenn

The same entrance shape repeats all over the region, so the useful way to read the list is by form rather than route. These seven are the forms the game itself distinguishes — each one is a separate pair of tiles in the code, one closed and one open. Every link below opens the route map with that exact entrance framed and selected; it does not open a base interior, because the room behind a spot belongs to whoever dug it.

Tree — left trunk

A thick-trunked tree standing alone beside the path. Secret Power works on the LEFT half of the trunk, and that half is its own base.

Tree — right trunk

The same kind of tree, entered from the RIGHT half of the trunk. Every Secret Power tree in Hoenn holds two separate bases, one per half, and they never share a room.

Shrub

A dense bush in the Fortree treetop country. It parts sideways instead of opening a hole, and it is the only form that is not a tree or a rock wall.

Rock wall (Red Cave tile)

A shallow indent in dusty-rose rock, and the commonest spot in Hoenn: the desert edge, the eastern sea routes and the cliffs north of Rustboro. The game files call this tile Red Cave, but it is drawn from exactly the same four tiles and the same palette as the Yellow and Blue ones — so on screen it is not red, and it is not distinguishable from them. The route is what tells the three apart.

Rock wall (Yellow Cave tile)

The same dusty-rose indent under the game’s Yellow Cave name, on Route 111’s desert edge, above Rustboro and along the cliffs of Route 127. Nothing on screen separates it from a Red or Blue Cave tile — the surrounding sand does not tint the rock, and the tile itself is identical.

Rock wall (Blue Cave tile)

The same dusty-rose indent once more, named Blue Cave in the game files, on Route 116 east of Rustboro and on the two Fortree routes. It is not grey-blue and it is not drawn differently; only the route tells you which of the three tiles you are standing at.

Ash-fall rock wall (Brown Cave tile)

The one rock wall you really can pick out by eye: an olive-grey indent from the Fallarbor ash-fall tileset, so it appears only on the two routes that run under Mt. Chimney’s ash fall.

A base starts empty. There are 120 decorations in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, sorted into the eight shelves the in-game menu uses, and where a piece comes from ranges from a shop shelf in Fortree to fifteen Battle Frontier prizes that cost Battle Points. How many Secret Base locations are there in Hoenn?

75, spread over 13 routes. They are not evenly spread: Route 115 has eleven and Route 113 has one.

How many Secret Base entrance forms are there?

Seven in the game’s code, but only five you can tell apart on screen. The left and right halves of a Secret Power tree are separate entrances, then a shrub, then four rock-wall tiles the files call Red, Yellow, Blue and Brown Cave — and the first three of those are drawn with exactly the same graphic.

What is the difference between the red, yellow and blue Secret Base rock walls?

Nothing you can see. All three use the same four tiles at the same palette, so they render identically; only the route they stand on differs. The fourth rock wall, Brown Cave, comes from the Mt. Chimney ash-fall tileset and is genuinely a different olive-grey graphic. Which of the three you used does not change what Secret Power does, either — the room you get is decided by the spot’s own base id.

Where do I get Secret Power in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald?

Can I have more than one Secret Base?

No. You hold exactly one. Using the base PC to move house frees the old spot and clears the arrangement of your decorations, though you keep the decorations themselves.

How many Secret Base decorations are there?

120, on eight shelves: desks, chairs, plants, ornaments, mats, posters, dolls and cushions.

Which Secret Base decorations are the hardest to get?

The fifteen Battle Frontier dolls and posters, which cost Battle Points; the three Hoenn starter dolls from the Mauville Game Corner, which cost Coins; and the Seedot, Regirock, Regice and Registeel dolls, which were distribution-event items and appear in no shop or script at all.

Does the Secret Base spot decide what the room looks like?

Yes. Twenty room layouts are shared across the 75 entrances, and the entrance you use decides which one you get.
