Feebas is the single most notorious catch in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald — not because it is rare on its route, but because the game hides it. Feebas can only be fished up on Route 119, and only on six of the route's 444 candidate water tiles. Those tiles look exactly like every other tile, are selected for your save, and move when the Dewford Town trend changes. This guide explains the mechanic and the fastest honest way to find your tiles.

How the hidden tiles work

Route 119 is the long, rainy river route between Route 118 and Fortree City. The game secretly selects six candidate water tiles for Feebas. On any selected tile, every resolved fishing encounter has a 50% chance to be Feebas. On every other candidate tile, Feebas never appears.

Finding your tiles, step by step

  1. Bring Surf and a rod Bring a Pokémon with Surf and any fishing rod. The Old Rod works because rod quality does not change the Feebas rate.
  2. Start at the south end Begin at the south end of Route 119 and work along the river in orderly strips.
  3. Fish every tile once Reel in one encounter from each reachable water tile on your first sweep. Testing new tiles covers the route faster than repeating one unproven tile.
  4. Keep the grid honest Use bridge posts, riverbanks and the Weather Institute as landmarks so that you do not skip or repeat a strip by accident.
  5. Catch several on the spot Once Feebas appears, stay on that tile and catch the number you need. The same tile can produce Feebas repeatedly while the trend stays unchanged.
  6. Repeat before you reroll A selected tile still produces a non-Feebas encounter half the time. If the first full sweep finds nothing, repeat the sweep. Change the Dewford trend only when you deliberately want a new set of tiles.
