Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald Trainer Card Stars Guide

Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald Trainer Card Stars Guide — Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald guide card

Get the gold Trainer Card: Hoenn Pokédex, five museum paintings and the correct Battle Tower or Battle Frontier requirement for your edition.

Published

A gold Trainer Card needs four stars. Three goals are shared across the Hoenn games: enter the Hall of Fame, catch the 200 required Hoenn Pokémon and fill Lilycove Museum's five contest-painting slots. The battle goal changes by edition: 50 consecutive Battle Tower wins in R/S, or all seven Gold Frontier Symbols in Emerald.

Hall of Fame · 200 Hoenn Pokémon · five museum paintings
R/S battle goal
At least 50 consecutive Battle Tower wins

Note — Original GBA rules: These requirements apply to the original Generation III games. For any Switch release, confirm its game version and supported features separately; this guide does not promise cartridge, GameCube or event compatibility.

Trainer Card colors and star order

The same color progression applies throughout R/S/E
StarsColorWhat changes
0GreenYour starting card
1BronzeOne of the four goals completed
2CopperTwo goals completed

You can complete the goals in any order. The colors follow the number of stars, rather than a specific order of achievements. Finishing the Pokédex before winning your first championship does not lock you out of the gold card.

Open the main menu and select your Trainer name. In Emerald, after receiving the Frontier Pass, choose its Trainer Card button to open the card; press A to turn it over. Its record pages show progress such as trades and battle results, but these counters do not all award stars. Use the requirements below to diagnose your next missing star.

Count the stars on the card, not the Pokédex total or badges. The supplied save has two stars and 386 registered Pokémon; the full National total still does not award the museum or Frontier star. Note — Illustrative prepared saves: The two examples below show the original Emerald silver and gold card designs. They were rendered by the game from prepared illustration saves: the extra museum and Frontier achievements were set for this comparison, rather than earned during capture. The four Trainer Card star requirements

Use the battle row for your edition
GoalRequirementHow to check
ChampionDefeat the Elite Four and Champion, and enter the Hall of Fame. One successful championship is enough; repeated clears do not add more stars.
Hoenn PokédexRegister the 200 required Hoenn species as caught. Jirachi and Deoxys are optional.Check caught entries, not the seen total. Every required evolution stage counts separately.
Lilycove MuseumHave a painting in each of the five categories: Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart and Tough.Visit the museum's upstairs gallery. Five wins in one category still fill only one category slot.
Battle goal — Ruby / SapphireRecord a streak of at least 50 consecutive wins at the Battle Tower.Use the straight-win record. Separate shorter streaks cannot be added together.
Battle goal — EmeraldEarn all seven Gold Frontier Symbols through the normal Silver-to-Gold challenges.Inspect each facility's symbol. Seven Silver Symbols alone are not enough.

Star 1: enter the Hall of Fame

Beat the Elite Four and the Champion with a team that can finish the entire run. Let the championship and Hall of Fame sequence complete, then check your card. Gym Badges unlock the journey to the Pokémon League, but collecting all eight badges by itself does not award this star.

Star 2: finish the Hoenn Pokédex

This is the 200-entry Hoenn target, rather than all 386 National Dex entries. You will need the other starter families, version exclusives and trade evolutions. Pokémon received in a trade count, and a caught entry remains registered after you return a borrowed Pokémon.

Use the Hoenn Pokédex completion guide for the family checklist and trade plan. Its separate National-diploma targets should not be confused with this Trainer Card requirement.

Star 3: collect all five museum paintings

Visit Lilycove Museum and take the curator's introduction to the upstairs gallery before chasing the paintings. Then qualify for Master Rank, finish first with a sufficiently high total score and accept the artist's request after the contest. Repeat for Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart and Tough.

A Master Rank ribbon proves that you won; it does not prove that your score qualified for a painting. The hidden total must reach at least 800. You may use a different Pokémon for each category, so choosing five specialists is a practical route.

The contest guide explains preparation and appeal plans; the museum paintings guide tracks the five slots and explains what to check when the artist does not appear. Once all five are displayed, the painting goal contributes one star.

R/S star 4: win 50 Battle Tower battles in a row

The original R/S Battle Tower goal is a consecutive streak of at least 50 wins. A lifetime total of 50, fifty link-battle victories or several shorter runs do not meet it. Choose a legal three-Pokémon team, stay within the selected level rules and continue the same challenge streak.

Tower matches are played in sets of seven. After seven complete sets you have 49 wins, so keep going: the next battle reaches 50. Do not stop because a guide calls this a '50-win total', and do not reset after a loss expecting the broken streak to survive.

Prepare for repeated matches rather than one favorable opponent. Give each Pokémon a clear job, cover shared weaknesses and check held items before entering. A consistent team still has to handle awkward opponents and unlucky turns; a suggested team cannot guarantee fifty victories. The Ruby & Sapphire Battle Tower guide covers the rooms, save rules, prizes and a sample team.

Emerald star 4: earn all seven Gold Symbols

Emerald replaces the R/S Tower achievement with the Battle Frontier. Defeat the Gold challenge at every facility: Tower, Dome, Palace, Arena, Factory, Pike and Pyramid. A long streak at the Tower alone cannot replace the other six Gold Symbols.

The Battle Tower entrance and plaza at Pokémon Emerald's Battle Frontier.
Emerald's Battle Tower is one of seven Frontier facilities. This entrance capture identifies the location; it does not show a Gold Symbol.

Each facility changes how a team succeeds. The Palace ties move choices to nature, the Factory uses rentals, the Pike adds room events and the Pyramid tests supplies as well as battles. Read the Emerald Battle Frontier guide for the exact Silver and Gold challenge points before committing to a streak.

The Frontier Pass records facility symbols; the Trainer Card records the overall star. Both are useful, but earning battle points or a single Gold Symbol does not complete the Trainer Card's Frontier goal. Through normal play, each Gold award follows its Silver award.

Trainer Card stars FAQ

How do I get the gold Trainer Card in Ruby and Sapphire?
Complete the Hall of Fame, 200 required Hoenn caught entries, all five museum paintings and a streak of at least 50 Battle Tower wins.
How do I get the gold Trainer Card in Emerald?
Complete the three shared goals, then earn Gold Symbols at all seven Battle Frontier facilities.
Do I need all 386 Pokémon for a Trainer Card star?
No. The Pokédex star checks the 200 required Hoenn Pokémon. The National diploma and full 386 collection are separate goals.
Does winning every Master Rank contest count for the painting star?
Only if the five museum category slots are filled. The Master Rank win also needs a total score of at least 800 and the artist's painting must be accepted.
Can the Trainer Card have five stars in Generation III Hoenn?
No. The R/S/E card has four available stars, with gold as the highest color.
Does my Trainer ID, play time or trade count award a star?
No. Those records help describe your save but are not additional star goals.
Can I earn the battle star without playing the other facilities in Emerald?
No. All seven Gold Frontier Symbols are required; the R/S 50-win Tower rule does not replace Emerald's requirement.
