Ruby & Sapphire Battle Tower Guide: Rules, Prizes & Teams

The original Ruby and Sapphire Battle Tower: how to get there, Level 50 vs Level 100 rules, saving, every prize, the 50-win star and a sample team.
Published
In Ruby and Sapphire, the Battle Tower is a post-game island reached on the S.S. Tidal from Slateport or Lilycove. You enter three Pokémon in the Level 50 or Level 100 room and fight seven Trainers per room for a prize. A best streak of 50 earns the Trainer Card star; 56 earns Ribbons.
- Game
- Ruby Sapphire
- You need
- The Hall of Fame entered and the S.S. Ticket
- Where
- Ferry from Slateport City or Lilycove City
- Rewards
- A vitamin or hold item per room, Ribbons from 56 wins, shields at 50 and 100
Note — Playing Emerald?: Emerald replaces this island with the seven-facility Battle Frontier. Its Tower has other modes and its Trainer Card star needs all fourteen Frontier Symbols — see the Emerald Battle Frontier guide.
How to get to the Battle Tower in Ruby and Sapphire
- Enter the Hall of Fame The ferry service only runs after you become Champion. Until then the harbor attendants turn you away.
- Collect the S.S. Ticket at home Go back to your house in Littleroot Town. The S.S. Ticket that Mr. Briney sent is handed to you there.
- Board the S.S. Tidal and choose Battle Tower Show the ticket at Slateport City’s or Lilycove City’s harbor and pick Battle Tower as the destination. The attendant outside the Tower takes you back to either city.

Battle Tower rules: Level 50 or Level 100, three Pokémon
Every challenge is a Single Battle with exactly three Pokémon. There are no Double or Multi Battles, no rentals and no link mode in this Tower. Your HP, PP and held items are restored before each battle, so a Berry eaten in battle 3 is back for battle 4.
| Room | Your Pokémon | Opponents | Ribbon at 56 wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 50 | Lv 50 or lower; lower ones stay at their own level | Always Lv 50 | Winning Ribbon |
| Level 100 | Any level; they are not raised to 100 | Always Lv 100 | Victory Ribbon |
The usual restrictions apply in both rooms: no Eggs, no two of the same species and no two of the same held item. Ten Pokémon are banned: Mew, Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi and Deoxys.
Warning — A Level 100 room is not a level-scaled room: A post-game team in the 60s faces Level 100 opponents with no adjustment. For the 50-win goal, the Level 50 room with Pokémon at exactly Lv 50 is the realistic route. A Pokémon that reaches Lv 51 can never enter that room again — there is no way to lower a level.
Saving, quitting and losing a streak
The game saves when you enter a Battle Room. After each win you get three choices: face the next opponent, save and quit, or cancel the challenge.
| You… | Result |
|---|---|
| Save and quit between battles | The streak survives. Talk to the receptionist to resume the same room. |
| Cancel the challenge | The game resets without saving. On return the run is disqualified and the streak is 0. |
| Switch off or reset without saving | Same as cancelling: disqualified, streak reset. |
| Lose a battle | The streak ends. Your record and best streak are kept. |
Warning — Never pull the power to undo a loss: The entry save marks the run as in progress, so resetting mid-room never brings back a streak. The only safe stop is “save and quit” between battles.
Battle Tower prizes, Ribbons and the 50-win record
| When | Reward |
|---|---|
| Rooms 1–5 cleared | One random vitamin: HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Carbos or Zinc |
| Room 6 onward | One random hold item: Bright Powder, White Herb, Quick Claw, Leftovers, Mental Herb, King’s Rock, Focus Band, Scope Lens or Choice Band |
| Best streak 50 | Silver Shield decoration from the Tower’s owner in the lobby, and the Trainer Card star |
| Room 8 cleared (56 wins in a row) | Winning or Victory Ribbon for each of the three entrants |
| Best streak 100 | Gold Shield decoration |
A full Bag does not lose a room prize: the receptionist keeps it until you make space. A full decoration PC likewise keeps a shield waiting. Each Pokémon receives a Ribbon only once; later rooms do not add a second.
The 50th win is the first battle of room 8, so seven cleared rooms (49 wins) are not enough. The Level 50 and Level 100 streaks are counted separately, and the card uses whichever best streak is higher. The back of the Trainer Card shows your total Tower wins and that best streak. The Trainer Card guide covers the other three stars.
How Battle Tower opponents get stronger
Each room draws its first six opponents from a band of trainers and its seventh from a stronger one. Their Pokémon have fixed IVs that rise with the band: 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, then a perfect 31. From room 8 — exactly where the 50th win sits — every opponent has 31 IVs in every stat and draws from the strongest Pokémon sets.
In the Level 50 room those late sets are predictable. Of the 120 sets the room-8 trainers draw from, 40 carry Earthquake, 25 Thunderbolt, 23 Surf, 15 Ice Beam and 14 Explosion. Eighteen hold a Salac Berry, nine a Bright Powder and eight a Quick Claw. Familiar faces include Metagross, Salamence, Latias, Latios, Starmie and the three Regis.
Note — Record Mixing opponents: A friend’s Tower record received through Record Mixing over a GBA link cable can replace your next opponent when their saved streak matches yours in the same room. An e-Reader Battle Tower card can do the same. Nothing about Nintendo Switch behavior is confirmed here; these are original Game Boy Advance features.
A Battle Tower team for Ruby and Sapphire (Level 50)
This is one obtainable example, not a guaranteed streak. Every Pokémon and move below exists in the original Ruby and Sapphire, and each one covers a weakness of the other two. Swampert is immune to the Thunderbolt that threatens Starmie. Salamence is immune to the Earthquake that is so common late on. Starmie takes Ice Beam aimed at Salamence.
Sample Level 50 team — Ruby & Sapphire
| Pokémon | Where to get it | Moves |
|---|---|---|
| Swampert | Mudkip, your starter (trade one in if you chose another) | Earthquake: TM26 — the only copy, in Seafloor Cavern. Surf: HM03. Ice Beam: TM13. Protect: Lv 46. |
| Salamence | Bagon, Lv 25–35, in the back room of Meteor Falls | Dragon Claw: TM02, an item ball in the same room. Flamethrower: TM35. Fly: HM02. Protect: TM17. |
| Starmie | Staryu, Super Rod in Lilycove City, plus a Water Stone from the Abandoned Ship’s hidden rooms | Recover: Staryu Lv 15 — learn it before evolving. Thunderbolt: TM24. Ice Beam: TM13. Surf: HM03. |
TM13, TM24 and TM35 are Mauville City Game Corner prizes at 4,000 coins each and can be bought again. TM17 Protect is sold in Lilycove Department Store. Every other TM is single-use, and the one Earthquake TM is the scarcest — decide who gets it before you use it. Give Salamence a nature that raises Sp. Atk: in Generation III, Dragon and Fire moves are special. Starmie wants Speed or Sp. Atk; Swampert is happy with Sp. Atk, because Surf and Ice Beam are special too.
Warning — Metagross cannot have Meteor Mash at Level 50: In Ruby and Sapphire, Metang learns Meteor Mash at Lv 50 but evolves at 45, and Metagross learns it only at 55. A Metagross legal for the Level 50 room therefore never knows it. The Beldum gift in Mossdeep is still good for the Level 100 room.
Train EVs before the last levels up to 50, and use the vitamin prizes on the team you are building. The Generation III EV guide explains yields and the vitamin limit. Leftovers is a random Tower prize from room 6, so start Swampert on a Sitrus Berry and swap once it arrives. Starmie’s Shell Bell comes from the old man in Shoal Cave for four Shoal Salt and four Shoal Shells; Lum and Sitrus Berries are covered in the Berry guide.
Why Battle Tower streaks end — and what to do about it
| Cause | What helps |
|---|---|
| Bright Powder, Double Team, a missed 90% move | Prefer 100%-accurate attacks; keep a second attacker for the turn you miss. |
| Critical hits, Quick Claw turns, Salac Berry boosts | Do not leave a key Pokémon at low HP for one more attack; switch or heal. |
| Explosion from a Pokémon you could not knock out | Use Protect on the turn you expect it, or knock the user out first. |
| Sleep, paralysis or confusion on your answer to a threat | Lum Berry on your most important Pokémon; it comes back after every battle. |
| A Pokémon below Lv 50 in the Level 50 room | Level every entrant to exactly 50 — nothing scales it up. |
Ruby/Sapphire Battle Tower vs Emerald Battle Tower
| Topic | Ruby & Sapphire | Emerald |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Own island, S.S. Tidal | One of seven Battle Frontier facilities |
| Modes | Single, 3 Pokémon | Single (3), Double (4), Multi (2 + partner), link Multi |
| High-level room | Level 100: opponents Lv 100 | Open Level: opponents match your highest level, at least Lv 60 |
| Room reward | A vitamin or hold item | Battle Points |
| Boss | None | Salon Maiden Anabel at battles 35 and 70 (Singles) |
| Trainer Card star | Best Tower streak of 50 | All seven Silver and Gold Frontier Symbols |

A streak, a Ribbon, a room prize and (in Emerald) a Frontier Symbol are four different things. The Ribbon comes at 56 wins in both games, but only Ruby and Sapphire count the Tower streak toward the Trainer Card. The Ribbon Master guide tracks both Tower Ribbons.
Ruby and Sapphire Battle Tower: quick answers
- How do I get to the Battle Tower in Ruby and Sapphire?
- Enter the Hall of Fame, collect the S.S. Ticket at home in Littleroot, then take the S.S. Tidal from Slateport or Lilycove and choose Battle Tower.
- How many Battle Tower wins do I need for the Trainer Card star in Ruby?
- A best streak of at least 50 wins in a row, in either room. Total wins across several runs do not count.
- Should I pick Level 50 or Level 100 in the Ruby/Sapphire Battle Tower?
- Level 50 for most players. Level 100 opponents are always Lv 100, and your Pokémon are not raised to match.
- What prizes does the Ruby/Sapphire Battle Tower give?
- A random vitamin for each of the first five rooms, then a random competitive hold item such as Leftovers or Choice Band. Shields come at best streaks of 50 and 100.
- Can I save in the middle of a Battle Tower challenge?
- Yes, between battles with “save and quit”. Resetting without that save disqualifies the run.
- Which Pokémon are banned from the Battle Tower in Gen 3?
- Mew, Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi and Deoxys — the same ten in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
- What is the best Battle Tower team in Gen 3?
- No team guarantees a streak. Three Pokémon that cover each other’s weaknesses — such as Swampert, Salamence and Starmie — and accurate moves get you furthest.
